FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Journey through the Four Worlds of Tu B’Shvat

Vancouver, BC, Jan 5, 2005.  Experience the four worlds of Tu B’Shvat, the Jewish New Year of Trees, through a Kabbalistic seder combined with environmental teachings.  Adam va-Adamah Environmental Society/COEJL of BC in partnership with a number of Vancouver synagogues will present this unique event at Schara Tzedeck, 3476 Oak St on Monday Jan 24th at 6:30 PM.  Participants will visit stations each representing the four dimensions of creation, assiya, yetzira, briya, and atzilut, guided by rabbis and environmental educators, followed by a traditional Sephardi seder.

“This unique event will give the entire community the chance to experience a Tu B’shvat seder that reflects the Sephardi tradition and to link the celebration with Jewish values toward all creation,” said Rabbi Ilan Accoa from Congregation Beth Hamidrash.  Prior to the seder, attendees will engage in activities that reflect each of the Kabbalistic worlds, such as planting parsley to represent assiya (action).  “The multi-station approach will give people a hands on experience of the holiday, grounded in the teachings of our sages and reflecting our current environmental understanding,” said Rabbi Shachar Orenstein of Congregation Shaarey Tefilah.  Also, Adam va-Adamah biologist Peter Ballin will teach about local trees.

While the program begins at 6:30 PM, the doors open at 5:30 PM and Kosher pizza and salad will be available for purchase. A children’s program will also be available to encourage all to attend.  A donation of $5/individual and $20/family is suggested and participants are encouraged to bring a non-perishable Kosher item for the food bank. Partnership in Torah follows the event at 8:00 PM.

The sponsors of the program include Adam va-Adamah Environmental Society/COEJL of B.C., Shaarey Tefilah, Schara Tzedeck, Beth Hamidrash, Community Kollel, Vancouver Hillel and the Partnership for Torah program
